PREP GIRLS BASKETBALL: Cullman Christian takes down tough Hope squad

HANCEVILLE — Cullman Christian’s two losses this season were both to Evangel. Three of Hope Academy’s wins this season came against Evangel. Therefore, the Lions shouldn’t have had any hope versus Hope at home on Thursday, right?

Wrong.

Cullman Christian definitely had a prayer in its latest contest, blazing out of the gates and then staving off Hope’s adjusted defense to claim a 43-37 victory and improve to 19-2.

The Lions knocked down practically everything they put up in the first quarter, only missing a couple attempts from the field on their way to a 17-4 lead heading into the second.

Hope countered with a man-to-man, full-court-pressure defense the rest of the night, resulting in 22 turnovers for Cullman Christian, but the Lions leaned on a 54-percent shooting display and sank enough free throws to keep their opponent at bay.

“We had some real competition tonight,” Cullman Christian coach Jason White said. “Our defense was still good, but they’re an excellent team. The girls hung with the pressure and did what they needed to do to get the win.”

Yancey York claimed her latest double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds, while adding seven steals. Jordan Canaday was right behind with 13 points and seven assists, as was Haley White with 12 points and three assists.

More important than Eliza Siegenthaler’s two-point output was her nine rebounds.

“Those were big rebounds,” White said. “She had one of her best nights on the boards all season.”

Other Lion contributors were Louanne Stillwell, who had one point, six rebounds and three steals, and Christine Aldijaili, who had one point.

Cullman Christian will look to end the regular season with 20 wins on Monday night at Glen Iris in Birmingham.
