LOCAL SPORTS: Parks and Recreation Department starts running club for all ages

CULLMAN — The Cullman Parks and Recreation Department has started a USA Track and Field team and it ran in its first meet last Saturday at the Birmingham Track Club Classic meet at Samford University.

USA Track has been in existence since 1878, under different names. It was named USA Track and Field in 1992.

“We are so excited about our participation in this long standing program,” said Parks and Recreation Programs Director Christy Turner. “It allows children to be exposed to activities in track and field that they normally would not have the opportunity to be a part of at such a young age.

“It also gives older kids and adults the ability to continue participating in sports they enjoy outside of a school setting.”

Saturday, four girls and two boys had good finishes.

Savannah Smith of Cullman High won the javelin throw and was second in the shot put.

Jordan Thornton, also from Cullman High, was second in the high jump and ninth in the 200-meter dash.

Seven-year-old Annelise Turner won the long jump for her age group and finished eighth in the 100-meter dash.

Ryleigh Thornton, age 10, was eighth in the 400-meter dash and 12th in the long jump.

On the boys’ side, 11-year-old Rutland Turner won the shot put and discus while taking fifth in the javelin.

Maverick Smith, age 13, won the javelin throw and finished second in both the shot and discus.

“We want to make this a permanent addition to our programs here and encourage all who are interested to contact us for more information,” Turner said.

Athletes from all around the area are encouraged to participate.
