The Cullman Times
Spring break did nothing to slow down the momentum of Cullman’s varsity tennis squads, as the Bearcats picked up team victories over Muscle Shoals on Monday at home.
The boys rolled to a 9-0 shutout, while the girls eked by with a 5-4 squeaker over the Trojans.
The Black and Gold boys were simply too much to handle in singles play, sweeping Muscle Shoals with dominating perfomances by all six Bearcats.
Clint Watson (6-1, 6-0), Baylor Adams (6-0, 6-1) and Jacob Davis (6-4, 6-0) took home convincing victories as the top three seeds for Cullman.
Teammates Luke Bowden, Ryan Hunt and Matthew Davis were victorious as well in the fourth through sixth posts.
Things didn’t get any better for the Trojans in doubles.
No. 1 Adams/J. Davis (6-2, 6-2), No. 2 Watson/Bowden (6-2, 6-0) and Hunt/M. Davis (6-1, 6-0) earned easy wins over their opponents to complete the clean sweep for Cullman.
The girls, on the other hand, fought tooth and nail to pick up their team victory.
No. 1 Hannah Cornelius (3-6, 7-5, (11-13)), No. 2 McKenzie Bussman (5-7, 4-6) and No. 3 Kate Hood (2-6, 3-6) lost their singles matches but were aided by their higher-seeded teammates.
Bailey Baker (No. 4, 6-0, 6-1) and Anna Trevarthen (No. 5, 0-6, 6-3, (10-6) picked up clutch wins for the Bearcats, while Makenna Smith won a match-clinching tiebreak 15-13 to get her team back to even in singles.
No. 1 Cornelius/Bussman and No.2 Baker/Smith earned monumental wins in doubles play, while Mary Claire Smith/Hood fell at the No. 3 position.
With matching 9-0 team victories over section-foe Sylacauga on Tuesday, Cullman’s boys improved to 13-1 (5-0 in section play), while the girls moved to 11-2 (6-0).
