PREP INDOOR TRACK: Thornton takes fifth in long jump (UPDATED)

Faulk leads St. Bernard to strong showing in Class 1A-4A at state meet

BIRMINGHAM — Cullman High’s Jordan Thornton finished fifth in the triple jump Saturday to cap off a successful two days at the Indoor State Championships at the Metro CrossPlex in Birmingham.

Her 32’5.5” result came one day after taking second and earning All-State honors in the pole vault with a clearance of 9 feet.

The Bearcats’ Stephen Mcneal, Adam Lindsey, Matthew Huddleston and Mark Gomez ran to fourth in the 4 x 800 meter relay.

Chris Johnson competed in the shot put, earning ninth with a heave of just over 41 feet.

Sam Crowder was busy Saturday, running and jumping to 10th in the 60-meter hurdles and blazing to 17th in the 60-meter dash.

Waid Harbison followed an 11th-place spot in the long jump Friday with a 10th-place showing Saturday in the triple jump.

Other notable Cullman competitors were Emma Doss, 11th in the 60-meter hurdles; Huddleston, 12th in the 1,600-meter run; Devan Hall, 13th in the 1,600-meter run; Julia Masters, 14th in the 60-meter hurdles; and Lindsey, 15th in the 400-meter dash.

The Bearcat girls finished the state meet ninth as a team, while the boys were 10th.

St. Bernard

Will Faulk just barely missed out on All-State honors (top 3) in the 3,200-meter run by finishing fourth in the Class 1A-4A division of the state meet. However, coach William Calvert said the runner’s time of 10:27 was a personal best at that distance.

Faulk had another personal record in the 1,600-meter run. He finished the race fifth with a time of 4:44.9, putting him just one second behind the third-place racer.

His times in both events were good for second among all 1A runners.

“He’s been working hard all winter, and it’s nice to see it pay off,” Calvert said. “His performance bodes well for the outdoor season.”

Logan Ayers had a PR in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:37, which was good for 15th overall (third in 1A). She also finished 15th (third in 1A) in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 5:55. Ayleanna Mami was literally one second behind her teammate, taking 16th (fourth in 1A) in the 1,600.

The state’s indoor track championship program returned this year with the opening of the state-of-the-art Metro CrossFlex facility in December.

“That’s a magnificent place down there,” Calvert said. “It’s unbelievably nice.”

One day after turning in the country’s fastest time of the season in the 3,200-meter run, Carmen Carlos of McGill-Toolen Catholic High School (6A) wowed the Birmingham crowd with a 4:57 mile.

Vinemont

Tyler Boland led a host of Eagles who proved they were among the state's best in Class 1A-4A.

The sophomore received All-State honors by finishing second in the triple jump. His distance of 41'10” was only bested by a 42'1.25” effort by Beauregard's Shaquille Williams.

In addition to his high result in the triple jump, Boland also took seventh in the long jump with a leap of 18'9”.

A number of other Vinemont athletes touted top-15 finishes at the state meet.

Levi Ponder raced to a ninth-place spot in the 60-meter hurdles, while Hayden Shutt cleared 9'6” in the finals to secure ninth in the pole vault.

T.J. Steele excelled in the longer-distanced races, claiming 10th in the 800- and 1,600-meter runs.

Alex Pettus had a heave of 24'8.75” in the woman's shot put to finish 10th in the event.

Steele, Char Stevens, Nathan Handley and Dalton Harbison combined for 10th in the 4x800 meter relay, while Boland, Ponder, Taylor Evans and Kyle Weems grabbed 12th in the 4x200 meter relay.

For the women, Ashley Chambers, Erin Handley, Destiny Lansford and Sydney Dodson were 10th in the 4x400 meter relay. The Eagles swapped Chambers with Lucy Priess in the 4x800 meter relay, where they also finished 10th.

Weems sped to 11th in the 60-meter hurdles, and Trey Guthery launched his way to 15th in the long jump.

Vinemont's boys finished 14th as a team.
