LOCAL SWIMMING: Glasscock continues to set records, Catfish dominate tri-meet

CULLMAN — Bennett Glasscock became the first member of the Cullman Swim Team to ever complete the 100-yard freestyle in under 50 seconds and broke team records in two other events Tuesday at the Cullman Wellness and Aquatic Center, vaulting the Catfish to a dominant tri-meet victory over Florence and Albertville.

Like Glasscock, Elijah Price, Reese McNeel and Sarah Peel all won three individual events apiece to give the Cullman Swim Team 620.5 points, almost 400 more than both of its opponents.

Glasscock, 16, has turned in faster and faster times every time he’s hit the water this summer and continued that trend on Tuesday. The St. Bernard swimmer won the 100-yard freestyle in 49.80 seconds and also set team records with victories in the 50-yard freestyle (22.72) and 50-yard breaststroke (29.98).

Price’s dose of triple trouble came in the 11- to 12-year-old boys 100-yard individual medley, 50-yard backstroke and 100-yard freestyle.

McNeel shone in the 9- to 10-year-old girls 50- and 100-yard freestyles, as well as the 50-yard backstroke, while Peel continued to dominate the 11- to 12-year-old girls division, taking first in the 100-yard IM, 50-yard breaststroke and 100-yard freestyle.

Eight other Catfish claimed victories in at least two individual events to lead the team to their second straight tri-meet triumph.

Jake Dye and Sawyer Trimble both pulled off the feat in the 8-and-under boys age group. Dye won the 25-yard freestyle and butterfly, while Trimble was the top dog in the 100-yard IM and 50-yard freestyle. Dye finished runner-up to Trimble in the 100-yard IM, and Trimble took second in the 25-yard breaststroke.

The last two boys with two wins were Jaden Orr and Eric Pilcher. Orr, 9, swept the 50-yard backstroke and butterfly. Pilcher, 14, touched the wall first in the 50-yard breaststroke and 100-yard freestyle and added a second-place result in the 100-yard IM.

Anna Page, representing the 8-and-under girls, snagged victories in the 25-yard freestyle and butterfly and finished second in the 100-yard IM.

Reagan Martin went home with a pair of first-place spots in the 9- to 10-year-old girls 100-yard IM and 50-yard butterfly, while Laura Lindsey did the same in the 13- to 14-year-old girls 50-yard backstroke and butterfly.

Michelle Pilcher kept up a strong summer season by topping the 15- to 18-year-old girls field in the 100-yard IM and 50-yard breaststroke. She also took second in the 100-yard freestyle.

The Catfish’s regular season will close Thursday with a road meet versus Boaz. The District II Championship will be July 12-14 in Fort Payne, and all qualifying swimmers will compete at the Alabama Recreation and Parks Association State Championship July 26-28 in Opelika.
