NORTH REGIONAL SOFTBALL TOURNAMENT: Holly Pond ends season with 2-0 loss to Deshler

HUNTSVILLE — Being one of the five local teams to make it to regional play this week, the Holly Pond softball team was looking to make some noise during its first day in Huntsville.

Unfortunately for Steve Miller’s squad, the bats just didn’t cooperate.

The Broncos fell 1-0 to Geraldine in eight innings before following up that defeat with a season-ending 2-0 loss to Deshler in the losers’ bracket shortly after on Friday.

“We just didn’t hit it very well,” Miller said. “We weren’t able to put it together today. We had some chances but never got the timely hit we needed.”

Holly Pond’s Montana Holcombe was sensational as the tough-luck loser for the Broncos in both contests, striking out 21 combined batters in 15 innings of work.

Despite two tough defeats, Miller was quite pleased with the heart and fight his team showed throughout the season.

“I think I’m as proud of this team as I’ve ever been,” he said. “We fought through a lot of adversity this year. Those girls showed a ton of class and character, and I think that’s a testament to how they’ve been raised and the quality of people they are. It’s been a fun season.”

Cullman’s softball squad was set to take on Lawrence County at 5 p.m. on Friday.

However, due to inclement weather, starting times were pushed back into the evening. Because of that, the Bearcats’ game was in-progress at presstime.
