DANVILLE — The Holly Pond varsity girls basketball team opened the Danville Thanksgiving Tournament on Wednesday with a 59-55 loss to Priceville followed by a 51-29 rout of West Morgan.

The Broncos took a 40-33 advantage into the fourth quarter against the Bulldogs and extended the lead to double digits but faltered down the stretch to hand Priceville the comeback victory.

“We turned the ball over 27 times. That’s not good,” Holly Pond coach Scott Adams said. “Plus, it didn’t help we were 7 of 17 at the free-throw line.”

All of the Broncos’ points came from only five players. Taylor Terry had the most with 17, but Meg Gambrill wasn’t far behind with 14. Rachel Finley was good for 11 points, Natasha Holcombe tossed in nine and Lexy Malone had four.

Adams was far more pleased with Holly Pond’s performance in its consolation-bracket battle with the Rebels. The Broncos held West Morgan to a meager three points in the fourth quarter while padding their lead with 10.

Finley led a balanced scoring effort with 12 points, while Holcombe and Terry both piled on 10. Gambrill and Malone contributed seven apiece, Taylor Rowell was credited with three and Lexi Lynn joined the party with two.

Holly Pond, now 3-1 on the season, was scheduled to continue tournament play against Rogers at 3:30 p.m. on Friday.

Results from other county schools participating in the tournament were not submitted by the time this story was published.
