— Wallace State’s inaugural BASS Fishing Club is already making a name for itself on the collegiate circuit.

Wallace State anglers Ethan Flack and Logan Shaddix recently qualified for the Carhartt College Series National Championship competition set for Aug 1-3 at Lake Catuge in Northeast Georgia.

Flack and Shaddix, both of Cullman, punched their ticket to the national event with a wild card selection after finishing 14th at the regional competition on Pickwick Lake. They reeled in a combined 28 pounds, 6 ounces over a two-day span.

Wallace State will be one of 13 colleges represented at the national championship.

“It’s really exciting. We went into the tournament at Pickwick with a good feeling. We knew at least one of our teams had a chance to have some success. Logan (Shaddix) and I found two good spots and we fished there a lot. We were lucky enough to earn a spot for the national tournament,” said Flack, the WSCC BASS fishing club president. “It’s a neat feeling knowing we get to compete against the best. I can’t wait for it. We’ve already been up in Georgia fishing on that lake (Catuge).”

At Pickwick Lake, Wallace State competed against teams from Auburn, Alabama, UNA, Clemson, Mississippi State, Georgia, Georgia Southern, Bethel University, Young Harris College, Louisiana Monroe, Lamar University and Kennesaw State.

Wallace State had two additional pairs compete in the field of 75 at Pickwick. Jordan Tuten and Bryant Quattlebaum teamed up as did Colton Henderson and Greg Dean.

Wallace State’s BASS fishing club competed for the first time ever in February at Guntersville Lake after Flack helped create interest across campus.

The primary purpose of the Wallace State BASS Fishing Club is to encourage camaraderie, sportsmanship, integrity, conservation and development of the skills and knowledge needed to be successful anglers by competing with other schools in FLW National Guard College Fishing tournaments and other fishing tournaments on a local and regional basis.

In order to compete for Wallace State, one must be a full-time student. Those interested in the club can call 256.352.8154.

Wallace State faculty club sponsors are Joe Hendrix, Jeremy Smith and Brian Hall.
