AUBURN NOTEBOOK: Chizik gets $1.9 million contract with incentives
AUBURN — Auburn coach Gene Chizik will make at least $1.9 million this year in a contract heavy on incentives.
Auburn released details of the five-year contract on Monday. The list of incentives include $500,000 for a national title and $200,000 for winning the Southeastern Conference.
If the Tigers make a bowl game this season, Chizik gets $50,000, plus double that each for being named national coach of the year or SEC coach of the year and for making the league title game.
He has escalating bonuses from $75,000-$200,000 for winning from 10 games up to 14.
The university also released contracts for the assistant coaches. The top paid is defensive coordinator Ted Roof at $370,000. Offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn gets $350,000, receiver coach Trooper Taylor $320,000 and defensive line coach Tracy Rocker $300,000.
The total for Chizik’s assistants is more than $2.5 million. That’s still well below the $3.3 million Lane Kiffin’s staff is making at Tennessee.
