VINEMONT — Rain did little to deter Vinemont in a season-opening 7-1 win over Fairview at home on Tuesday.
Alabama A&M signee Raven Christiansen was in fine form in the pitcher's circle, striking out 12 in five innings of work. Autumn Barnette added two K's of her own in two innings of relief.
Christiansen and Caitlin Kuykendall kicked off a scoring rally with base hits, followed by RBI doubles from Katie Speer, Kiersten Simmons and Kandice Chaffin. The Lady Eagles' last two runs came on singles from Barnette and Allison Fowler.
Vinemont, now coached by previous assistant Leslie Cole, has every intention of making a sixth straight trip to the regional stage come May.
“That's what we are working hard for,” said Cole, also the school's varsity volleyball coach. “They sure have the heart and drive to accomplish anything.”
The Lady Eagles will host Hanceville next Tuesday.
