PREP BASKETBALL: Bearcat boys, girls earn sweet revenge vs. visiting Arab

(Continued)

CULLMAN — Varsity Girls

: Baylee Johnson scored 19 points and Christina Skinner threw in a double-double — 16 points and 10 boards — to help the Bearcats slide past the Knights on Thursday.

Jonathan Hayes’s team fell to Arab last week thanks in large part to turnovers and offensive rebounds. The coach had a bit of a talk with his players before they took the court this time.

“We had 30 turnovers and gave up 30 offensive boards,” he said. “So I told the girls this game would be a little easier if we didn’t give them 60 extra possessions this time. We challenged them to play better and they did. I’m proud of them.”

It was a tight bout all the way through, with Cullman holding a small 39-37 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Fortunately for the Black and Gold, they opened the frame on a 9-2 run to give them some breathing room. From there, they were able to get some stops, make some free throws and hold on for the nice triumph.

“I'm proud of them for handling their D and their pressure,” Hayes said. “We weren't timid. It opened things up for us and we made some shots.

Oakleigh White had seven points to help out her teammates, while senior Hayden Short was a jill-of-all-trades — five points, five steals, five assists and seven rebounds. Madison Cobbs and Kaitlyn Brannon rounded out the scoring for Cullman (16-9).
