Chase Mallard has only been a professional for less than a month — and he’s already received his first promotion.
After an extremely brief stint with the Bluefield Blue Jays (rookie), the former Cullman High pitcher and recent UAB graduate was called up by the Vancouver Canadians, the Toronto Blue Jays’ short-season Single-A affiliate.
Mallard sported a 2.61 earned run average in 10 1/3 innings with Bluefield. The righty retired all nine batters he faced to earn the save in his professional debut on June 20.
Mallard was drafted by Toronto June 7 in the 14th round of the MLB amateur draft. The Bearcat baseball product capped off his collegiate career as Conference USA’s Pitcher of the Year.
John Brown used a 7-iron to hit an ace on the 10th hole at Cullman Golf Course on Tuesday. The hole-in-one was witnessed by Bobby Brown, Cliff Green and Maurice Weeks.
