Blaise Wilson got off to a blazing start during Day 1 of the TP Invitational at TP Country Club on Friday afternoon.
Wilson carded a nice 6-under 66 to take a five-shot lead after 18 holes of the three-day golf tourney. The former Cullman Bearcat completed each of nine holes with a score of 33.
“It was like a normal fun day with my friends,” Wilson said of his round. “They’ve got their greens rolling so good right now. It’s just great to be out there at the moment.”
Wilson accomplished his good day without “anything flashy” and said he mostly put together a good score by “not doing anything dumb.”
“Nothing was great,” he said. “It’s kind of weird that I shot so low today when nothing was just working for me.”
Jake Greer (71), last year’s champion Jake Tucker (72), Todd Lindsey (72) and Sylas Elliott (73) rounded out the top five for the 34th annual tourney. Jordan Carter (74), Trey Hanvey (75) and Adam Shedd (75) are also in contention.
Wilson’s mindset tomorrow won’t be one of leisure, as he is looking to put as much space between him and the next guy as possible entering the final round.
“You’ve got to think about making it larger than five,” he said. “I’ve got some great players behind me, so I can’t really think about coasting. I’ve got to go out there and shoot low.”
The remaining scores are as follows: Zach Weaver (76); Layne Rice, Robbie Fields, Dana Amberson and Jeff Tiffin (77); Craig Lindsey and V. Alexander (78); J. Hollingsworth, Jake Tiffin and Zach Lynch (79); Luke Wilson (80); Connor Stevens and Rick Houston (81); Russell Carter (82); Britt Smallwood (86); Josh Ashley (87); Adam Burkette (91); and Brandon Elder (94).
