Wallace State freshman and Cullman High graduate Sylas Elliott carded a tremendous 4-under 67 in Saturday’s third round of the 47th Spirit of America Classic at Burningtree Country Club.
Elliott mixed in three birdies and an eagle to go along with a closing bogey on the 18th hole. He jumped from 29th to 11th place after his round but still sits nine shots back of leader John Michael O’Toole (-9) at even par for the tournament.
O’Toole is three strokes clear of Forrest Gamble and Matt Gourgeot.
Fellow Lion and Good Hope grad Eli Marty shot even and will stick around for Sunday following the 54-hole cut. Marty is tied for 28th at 5-over par.
Arab’s Zach Weaver (+12), Fairview’s Trey Hanvey (+23) and Cold Springs’ Layne Rice (+28) failed to make the top-50 cut.
