IDER —
Matthew Collins’ 78-yard touchdown run, not quite two minutes into the new high school football season, set the tone as Ider beat Addison 27-7.
Collins carried 14 times for 166 yards, leading the Hornets in a nonregion victory at Wayne C. Hardman Stadium.
“[Collins] was able to break a couple of big runs,” coach Brent Tinker said. “I felt like he’s pretty elusive. A few times he’s got to be able to square up and get those tough yards for us, but at the same time he slips and slides and made a couple of big runs for us.”
Ider added to its lead when Justin Lee recovered a fumbled Addison snap in his end zone for a touchdown at the 5:33 mark of the first quarter.
Addison answered with Seth Robinson’s 15-yard touchdown run late in the second quarter.
“We kind of stalled out, and they regained momentum in the first quarter,” Tinker said. “We challenged our guys at halftime and knew we had to go out and respond.”
Collins scored again with 7:53 to go in the third on a 1-yard run. Josh Simpson’s point-after kick made it 21-7.
Landry Gaddis earned his first varsity touchdown pass on a 17-yard strike to Tyler Ogle with 3:32 to go in the third.
“It was a good first game for him as a quarterback,” Tinker said. “He’s got to slow down and take a little more control of the offense.”
Ider (1-0) opens Class 2A, Region 7, play on Friday at home against West End (0-1). Addison (0-1) starts its Class 1A, Region 6, schedule at home against Ragland, which didn’t play this week.
VINEMONT 26, BRINDLEE MOUNTAIN 7
Ty Jones rushed for 217 yards and three touchdowns, and Tyler Boland added 194 yards and one touchdown, as the Eagles outlasted Brindlee Mountain.
Vinemont finished with 453 yards rushing and 468 yards total offense.
Boland broke loose for a 48-yard touchdown on the second play of the game. Jones scored his first touchdown of the night in the second quarter, and Vinemont took a 12-0 lead into halftime.
Brindlee Mountain had the momentum in the second half, scoring a touchdown on the opening drive of the third quarter. The Eagles were quickly forced to punt, and the Lions drove deep into Vinemont territory before the Eagles came up with a stop.
Jones capped the ensuing eight-play drive with his second touchdown of the game, giving Vinemont an 18-7 lead and added an insurance touchdown with less than six minutes left in the game.
“The bottom line was in the third quarter both teams had the opportunity to win the game,” said Vinemont coach Alan Scott. “Brindlee Mountain had the momentum, and our guys showed a lot of character because they went out and took it. It was a good way to start the year off. At times we were sloppy, but in the end we did what we had to do to win.”
Vinemont travels to face Danville next Friday at 7 p.m.
