LANSING, Mich. — A Michigan House committee is considering a bill to place regulations on amateur mixed martial arts events.
The bill was taken up Tuesday before the Regulatory Reform Committee.
It would require event promoters to get state licenses. It would set rules for the length and number of rounds, require insurance for contestants and establish weight classes. Detroit Democratic Rep. Harvey Santana is the bill's sponsor.
Santana says Michigan is one of 13 states that don't regulate amateur events. He says five states have made them illegal.
Michigan now regulates professional mixed martial arts. The sport combines boxing, wrestling and jujitsu.
Committee Chair Republican Hugh Crawford says it is "not a partisan issue" but a "safety issue." He says he believes the bill will be voted favorably out of the committee.
