PREP BASKETBALL: Trimble leads Fairview girls to easy win over Hanceville (PHOTO GALLERY)

HANCEVILLE —  It wasn't the prettiest performance Fairview coach Cheryl Mangum has ever seen, but it was effective enough as her Aggies defeated Hanceville 36-17 on Monday to advance in the Cullman County Basketball Tournament.

“We didn't play to our maximum potential tonight,” Mangum said. “But, we played well enough to win.”

Both teams got off to sluggish starts offensively with Fairview leading just 5-0 after one quarter of play.

Hanceville did its best to keep up with the Aggies, trimming its deficit to three points on a Taylor Hollingsworth basket midway through the second quarter.

Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, Fairview's Kennedy Trimble found her shooting stroke the rest of the way, connecting on 4 of 5 attempts from 3-point land to give her team a nine-point advantage heading into halftime.

“Kennedy Trimble had an excellent game,” Mangum said. “She really likes to shoot in this gym.”

The Aggies' lead was never threatened in the second half as Hanceville couldn't find any consistency on offense.

A Sarah Harper 3-pointer gave Fairview a 15-point lead heading into the final quarter, when the Aggies simply milked the clock to preserve their victory.

Trimble led all scorers with 17 points, while teammates Kylee Bannister and Marlana Johnson added six and five points each, respectively.

Other Aggie contributors included Alley Raper and Harper, three points; and Julia Creel, two.

Fairview moves on to face third-seeded West Point Tuesday at 6:15 p.m. A win over the Warriors will require a much better effort from Mangum's squad.

“We are going to have to play five times better than we did tonight,” she said.

Hanceville was spearheaded by Taylor Hollingsworth's nine points. Mariah Twitty netted five, while Brittani Armstrong contributed three.
