PREP SOFTBALL: Eagles rebound from loss to sweep area-foe Sulligent; Lady Bearcats down Arab 7-2

COLD SPRINGS — The Cold Springs’ softball squad needed a bit of good news following a heartbreaking loss to Oakman on Thursday afternoon — for playoff purposes and for its psyche.

The Eagles led the Wildcats 1-0 in the top half of the seventh inning before surrending seven unanswered runs and taking the tough area defeat.

“Man, we had that game,” coach Patrick West said. “We had it. They had a bloop hit, and then it fell apart. We really needed that game, too. That would have been a big win for us.

“But we have to start a new winning streak.”

Fortunately for the longtime coach, that’s exactly what his team did on Friday afternoon.

Cold Springs trounced Sulligent 10-1 and 8-1 in an area doubleheader to move 9-5 on the season and 3-2 in area play.

Rilee White was dominant in the pitcher’s circle once again, tossing 11 innings in a two-game effort — she picked up both wins, allowed just one hit and struck out a combined 20 hitters. Just for kicks, she added fours hits and an RBI on the day.

Bailey West, Hanna Wilson, McKinnley Davis and Kelsey Hester each two hits and an RBI in Game 1, while Haley Freeman roped a two-run homer. Taylor Payne threw in a hit and a pair of RBIs. Emily Williams also had a hit.

In Game 2, Payne collected three hits and an RBI, while Hester and West were each good for two base knocks apiece. Freeman and Wilson each had a hit and two RBIs. Williams notched a single and an RBI. Davis collected a hit.

Hester pitched three innings over both games and struck out one batter.

“We’re still in the hunt,” West said of his team’s area hopes. “We just don’t control our own destiny.”

Cold Springs will play Prattville Christian and Good Hope at the latter’s Round Robin Tournament on Saturday.
