CARBON HILL —
Cold Springs more than made up for last year’s heartbreaking loss to Carbon Hill, scoring early and often Friday night on the road to take the rematch by a 40-22 final.
Carbon Hill's defense started off strong, holding the Eagles to a three-and-out. On the ensuing drive, however, Daniel Woodard's pass was intercepted by Caleb Ellison at midfield and returned to the Bulldog 31-yard line. Six plays later, Nicholas Speer ran in from the 1 to put Cold Springs on the board. The failed 2-point conversion left the score at 6-0.
Carbon Hill's next drive didn't last long as Ryan Simerly fumbled the ball away on the his own 49-yard line. The Eagles would again turn the turnover into points as Logan Campbell ran for a 22-yard touchdown. He ran in the 2-point conversion to make the score 14-0.
Cold Springs’ next drive started at its own 46-yard line. Two plays later, Vincent Stewart broke away for a 49-yard touchdown run, making the score 20-0.
A 44-yard kickoff return by Steven Mitchell and 15 yard penalty against the Eagles set Carbon Hill up on the Eagle 23-yard line. Two plays later, Ryan Simerly ran in from 12 yards out to put the Bulldogs on the board, 20-7.
After forcing Cold Springs to punt, Stewart intercepted Woodard's pass and returned it 80 yards for another Eagle touchdown, building their lead 27-7.
The Bulldogs started their next drive in Eagle territory. Simerly set the Bulldogs up on the 20 after a 24 yard run. Five plays later, Mitchell put the 'Dawgs on the board again from one yard out making the half time score 27-14.
After trading possessions to start the half, Cold Springs marched down the field. However, Campbell fumbled the ball on the 19-yard line and the Bulldogs came out of the pile with it. Carbon Hill covered the length of the field in four plays, with Simerly scoring again on a 12-yard run. Woodard ran in the 2-point conversion, making it a 27-22 with 11:27 left in the game.
Stewart and Campbell combined for 56 yards rushing on the next drive leading to another Eagle touchdown. The failed 2-point conversion made it an 11-point game with 8:29 left in the game.
Carbon's Hill's next drive started with Woodard passing to his left to Steven Simerly for a loss, however Steven did not get up from the hit.
After being worked on for several minutes, he was carried off the field on a stretcher.
With 2 minutes left in the game, Campbell ran in from 25 yards out to cap off the night's scoring.
Carbon Hill finished the night with nine penalties for 75 yards. Daniel Woodard went 6-for-13 passing for 29 yards and three interceptions.
