PREP FOOTBALL ROUNDUP: Warriors grab county win

WEST POINT — Kyle West and Luke Persall scored two touchdowns apiece to lead West Point to a 42-20 victory against Cullman County rival Hanceville Thursday night in a non-region game.

Blake Cobb and Brandon Jacobsen added one touchdown each for the Warriors (2-8), who rolled up 363 yards of total offense.

Hanceville (4-6) got 175 yards and three touchdowns from sophomore running back Diamond Simmons.

West Point fell behind 6-0 early but reeled off 21 unanswered points before taking a 28-14 halftime lead. The Warriors finished with 261 rushing yards on 45 attempts, good for 5.8 yards per carry.

Hanceville opened the scoring with 8:55 remaining in the first quarter on Simmons’ 2-yard touchdown run, but West Point responded with three straight scores.

Persall had scoring runs of 1 and 3 yards and West added a 2-yard plunge to give the Warriors a 21-6 lead midway through the second quarter.

Simmons’ second touchdown of the night, a 2-yard scamper, cut it to 21-14 late in the half, but West Point scored just seconds later on Logan Bates’ 52-yard touchdown pass to Jacobsen.

After the break, West Point got a 6-yard touchdown run from Cobb and a 7-yard run from West. Simmons’ third touchdown was an 8-yard run in the third quarter.

West led the Warriors with 98 yards on 16 carries, while Cobb added 67 yards on 17 attempts.

Jacobsen caught three passes for 87 yards and Bates finished with 102 yards on 5-for-5 passing.

West Point placekicker Mark Laney was a perfect 6-for-6 on extra points.

Vinemont 28, Sardis 20: The Eagles gained momentum heading into the playoffs by beating Sardis on the road.

The host Lions finished second in Class 3A, Region 6, while Vinemont took third place in Region 7.

The Eagles open the playoffs next week on the road against Elkmont, which finished second in Region 8.

Lynn 12, Addison 0: The host Bulldogs ended their season with a loss against Winston County rival Lynn.

Addison (4-6) was in the race for a postseason berth out of Class 2A, Region 7 until last week’s loss against Cleveland.

Lynn finished the regular season 8-2.
