SPIRIT OF AMERICA GOLF TOURNEY: McCurdy leads from start to finish, wins title

DECATUR — Will McCurdy led from wire to wire and shot his fourth straight round under par Sunday at the Burningtree Country Club to win the 44th annual Spirit of America Amateur Golf Classic.

The Auburn University golfer carded a 3-under 68 on his last 18 holes to finish at 12-under for the tournament, a comfortable five shots ahead of the University of Alabama's Trey Mullinax in second.

Wallace State's Deane Rikard completed the high-profile event in a tie for third at 2-under. The Lion followed his only round above par Saturday with a solid even-par 71 on the fourth and final day.

Cullman High graduate and current Troy University golfer Jake Tucker capped off an extremely consistent performance with a 1-over 72 Sunday. He was one of four players tied for 11th at 3-over.

Former Wallace State athlete Conner Godsey tied for 34th at 12-over.
