WEST POINT — WEST POINT — After seeing his team fall behind late in the second quarter Friday night at West Point, David Hulsey called timeout to make a simple request from his team.
The Good Hope High boys basketball coach wasn’t disappointed in their response.
After calling timeout, Good Hope closed the first half with eight straight points before and reeled off a 10-3 run after halftime. Riding the combined 18-3 run, the Raiders cruised to a 67-52 win over West Point at Jim Boyd Gymnasium.
“We were letting (West Point) dictate the pace of the game, and we should have been dictating the pace,” said Hulsey. “So I asked them to push the pace and start taking control around the basket.”
The plan worked, with Kyle Aycock grabbing a quick 3-pointer to give the Raiders (6-3) a 29-27 lead. Scott Motes followed with a tip-in and Cameron Aycock added another 3-pointer to give Good Hope a 34-27 advantage heading into halftime.
After the break, Cameron Aycock nailed two more 3-pointers during Good Hope’s 10-3 spurt. Kyle Aycock finished the run with a coast-to-coast layup that put the Raiders up by 14 points.
“Our kids play with a lot of heart, and that makes up for a lot of our fundamental flaws,” said Hulsey. “West Point played us as hard as any team has played against us this year.”
Cameron Aycock finished with 20 points, including six 3-pointers, to lead Good Hope, which recorded its second win of the season against West Point (2-8). The Raiders defeated the Warriors 70-56 in a home game on Nov. 17.
Kyle Aycock tossed in 18 points, Taylor Hollis finished with 17 and Motes added five.
With the victory, Good Hope remains undefeated in Cullman County play. The Raiders host Holly Pond Monday.
“We’re 6-3, but we’re still undefeated in county play and area play, and those are the two big ones,” said Hulsey, whose team led 17-15 after one quarter and 50-39 entering the fourth period.
For West Point, Zack Baswell tossed in 17 points, including four 3-pointers. Zach Douglas had 14 points and Kevin Aaron added eight.
