Coin tosses were none too kind to a pair of local basketball coaches looking to secure hosting rights for their respective area tournaments Wednesday.
Cullman boys coach Bobby Meyer called tails, which ultimately failed, resulting in East Limestone sweeping the top seeds for the Class 5A, Area 15 Tournament. The Bearcats and Indians were tied for the No. 1 spot at 5-1 in area play after splitting their season series.
"It's kind of like you just played your last game of the season," Meyer said of the unfortunate outcome. "It was a downer all day."
The Black and Gold’s first-round opponent will be West Point, which won its flip with Hartselle for the third seed. Both teams wrapped up their area schedules at 1-5.
Cullman defeated its cross-town rival 78-60 in mid-December and 88-62 earlier this month.
Like Meyer, Good Hope girls coach Michael Oldacre came up on the wrong end of a coin flip with Danville for first in 3A, Area 13. That leaves the Lady Raiders to play Hanceville in the first round of the area tourney. The top-seeded Hawks will take on Vinemont.
The Red and White have bested the Lady Bulldogs all three meetings this season, including Tuesday’s quarterfinal matchup at the Cullman County Basketball Tournament.
Good Hope boys coach Mike Jones was also unfruitful in his coin toss with Danville — both were 2-4 in area play — for the No. 3 position, meaning the Raiders will face host Hanceville in the first round. The Class 3A No. 4 Dawgs made it three in a row against the Red and White this season with a 62-46 victory on Monday at Wallace State’s Tom Drake Coliseum.
Girls area tournaments are scheduled for Feb. 3, 6 and 8, while boys area tournaments will go down Feb. 4, 7 and 10. Schools with both boys and girls hosting have the option to schedule their title tilts for the same date.
Holly Pond’s and Hanceville's boys and Cold Springs’ girls will act as hosts after clinching regular season area championship. The Lady Broncos can join the club with a home win at home against Brindlee Mountain next Monday.
