LOCAL SWIMMING: Catfish win state diving title, runner up in swimming

CULLMAN — This past weekend, the Cullman dive team won first place in the Alabama Recreation and Parks Association State Swimming Championship held this year in Opelika.

Out of 29 teams competing from across the state, the swim team took the runner-up trophy for the third year in a row in the championship meet.

Crowned champion was Scottsboro in the small municipality division with a score of 1503. The Catfish took second with a 1033, followed by Boaz, Jasper and Guntersville.

Every single swimmer from Cullman who competed contributed to the team score.

Sarah Peel took first place in the 11-12 girls 50-yard breaststroke, then came in second in the 100-yard IM and finished third in the 100-yard freestyle.

Eric Pilcher finished third in all three of his 13-to-14 age events: the 100-yard IM, the 50-yard breaststroke and the 100-yard freestyle.

Elijah Price came in third in the 11-to-12 50-yard backstroke.

Samuel Steward had a second-place finish in the 9-to-10 100-yard freestyle.

Sawyer Trimble finished third in two 8-and-under events: the 100-yard IM and the 25-yard breaststroke.

Keeli Balch, Reese McNeel, Claire Ogstad and Hannah Ogstad finished third in the 9-to-10 200-yard freestyle relay.

Adora Ralph, Charis Peek, Anna Evans and Peel finished third in the 11-to-12 200-yard freestyle.

Price, Hendrix, Hutson and Norris placed third in the 11-to-12 200-yard medley relay and third in the 11-to-12 200-yard freestyle relay.

The Cullman Wellness and Aquatic Center will host the state meet in 2013.

 

Boys

For the 8-and-under age group, the following swimmers competed in their respective events: Jake Dye (15th in the 25-yard butterfly and 18 in the 50-yard freestyle); Ben Kelly (14th in the 25-yard breaststroke); Reagan Ogstad (19th in the 25-yard freestyle); Sawyer Trimble (third in the 100-yard IM, third in the 25-yard breaststroke and fourth in the 50-yard freestyle);

Dye, Cort McNeel, Cooper Ogstad and Trimble placed fifth in the 8-and-under 100-yard freestyle relay.

In the 9-to-10 age group, the following swimmers competed in their respective events: Jonah Hilb (25th in the 100-yard IM); Samuel Stewart (fifth in the 50-yard freestyle, fifth in the 50-yard butterfly and second in the 100-yard freestyle).

Hilb, Stewart, Jaden Orr and Cannon Trimble finished seventh in the 200-yard medley.

Hilb, Tremble, Orr and Stewart finished sixth in the 200-yard freestyle.

In the 11-to-12 age group, the following swimmers competed in their respective events: Ethan Hendrix (11th in the 50-yard backstroke); Colby Hutson (11th in the 100-yard IM, eighth in the 50-yard breaststroke and seventh in the 50-yard butterfly); Neil Norris (sixth in the 50-yard freestyle, eighth in the 50-yard butterfly and seventh in the 100-yard freestyle); Elijah Price (eighth in the 100-yard IM, third in the 50-yard backstroke and fifth in the 100-yard freestyle).

In the 13-to-14 age group, the following swimmers competed in their respective events: Kyle Norris (10th in the 50-yard butterfly and 12th in the 100-yard freestyle) and Eric Pilcher (third in the 100-yard IM, third in the 50-yard breaststroke and third in the 100-yard freestyle).

Norris, Pilcher, Seth Campbell and Check Freeman finished sixth in the 200-yard medley relay.

Norris, Freeman, Campbell and Pilcher finished sixth in the 200-yard freestyle relay.

In the 15-to-18 age group, Christopher McAlpine finished eighth in the 50-yard butterly and 14th in the 50-yard backstroke.

Girls

In the 8-and-under age group, the following swimmers competed in their respective events: Jaedyn Martin (25th in the 25-yard butterfly); Anna Page (16th in 25-yard butterfly); and Maria Windham (12th in the 25-yard breaststroke).

Windham, Martin, Page and Madisyn Mehard finished 12th in the 100-yard medley relay.

Martin, Windham, Page and Mehard finished 13th in the 100-yard freestyle relay.

In the 9-to-10 age group, the following swimmers competed in their respective events: Cabri Adams (eighth in the 50-yard backstroke); Keeli Balch (ninth in the 50-yard freestyle, seventh in the 50-yard butterfly and ninth in the 100-yard freestyle); Reagan Martin (12th in the 100-yard IM and 10th in the 50-yard freestyle); Reese McNeel (sixth in the 50-yard freestyle, second in the 50-yard backstroke and sixth in the 100-yard freestyle); Claire Ogstad (16th in the 100-yard IM, sixth in the 50-yard breaststroke and 10th in the 100-yard freestyle); Kelly Warren (16th in the 100-yard freestyle).

McNeel, Claire Ogstad, Keelie Balch and Hannah Ogstad finished third in the 200-yard medley relay.

Adams, Kelly and Warren finished sixth in the 200-yard medley relay.

Martin, Kelly, Warren and Adams finished eighth in the 200-yard freestyle relay.

In the 11-to-12 age group, the following swimmers competed in their respective events: Anna Evans (15th in the 100-yard IM, 12th in the 50-yard butterfly and sixth in the 50-yard backstroke); Charis Peek (17th in the 100-yard IM, 17th in the 50-yard butterfly and 13th in the 50-yard backstroke); Peel (second in the 100-yard IM, first in the 50-yard breaststroke and third in the 100-yard freestyle); Adora Ralph (10th in the 50-yard freestyle); Jillian Richard (18th in the 50-yard breaststroke, 22nd in the 50-yard backstroke and 18th in the 100-yard freestyle).

Evans, Peel, Peek and Ralph finished fouth in the 200-yard medley.

In the 13-to-14 age group, the following swimmers competed in their respective events: Kacie Donaldson (10th in the 100-yard IM and 10th in the 50-yard butterfly); Rachel Hilb (21st in the 100-yard IM); Callie Hollingsworth (11th in the 50-yard breaststroke, seventh in the 50-yard freestyle and ninth in the 100-yard freestyle); Laura Lindsey (12th in the 50-yard backstroke); Morgan Matz (15th in the 100-yard IM and sixth in the 50-yard backstroke).

Hilb, Kane, Isabella Gardner and Haley Thomas finished 11th in the 200-yard medley relay.

Lindsey, Matz, Donaldson and Hollingsworth finished fifth in the 200-yard freestyle relay.

Kane, Thomas, Gardner and Hilb finished 12th in the 200-yard freestyle relay.

In the 15-to-18 age group, Michelle Pilcher finished sixth in the 100-yard IM, sixth in the 50-yard breaststroke and 10th in the 100-yard freestyle.
