PREP FOOTBALL: Warriors drop region finale to Indians

WEST POINT — With neither Class 5A, Region 8 team in playoff contention, West Point Point (2-7, 1-6) was eager to try and pull out a win over East Limestone for the seniors, who took the field in front of the home-crowd for the last time.

The Indians (4-5, 3-4) spoiled those hopes, however, mounting a ground attack against the Warriors that was just too much to handle, running away with the victory 41-6.

West Point received the opening kickoff to start play and was quickly forced to punt away its first possession of the night.

The Indians began their scoring frenzy on their first drive early in the first quarter. Tristian Matthews capped off the 91-yard possession on a 6-yard run to put East Limestone on the board first 6-0.

The Warriors found themselves with a fourth-and-4 situation on their next drive, catching the Indians off guard with a fake punt. Wesley Smith scrambled for 15 yards and the first down to extend the drive but turned the ball over on downs only four plays later.

Shortly thereafter,, and only seconds into the second quarter, the Indians had reached the end zone again, this time on a 2-yard run from Torren Haley. He finished with four touchdown carries on the night.

West Point finally found success with their passing game to get on the board and to try and keep the game close. Quarterback Tanner Rusk hit a wide-open Jordan McKenzie for a 47-yard touchdown grab. The extra-point attempt failed but the lead was cut to seven with 9:27 remaining in the second quarter.

The Indians answered back before the break with another 18-yard run by Haley, giving East Limestone a halftime lead of 20-6.

It was all East Limestone in the second half, scoring three more times, all off turnovers. Haley had a 2-yard run that resulted from an interception in the third quarter, and a 18-yard run that resulted from a West Point fumble in the fourth.

The final score in the game came on an interception. Shayquon Bradley made a 4-yard touchdown dash in the final three minutes of the game.

West Point will travel to Fairview next week for their final game of the 2012 season in a non-region matchup.
