ADDISON — GOOD HOPE — Tristan Hulsey didn’t hear a congratulatory yell from his father when he made a layup to give West Point High a one-point advantage heading into halftime.
His dad had a look of disgust on his face, instead.
But that was to be expected. Hulsey’s father, David, was the opposing team’s head coach, after all.
And no one can say David Hulsey has a conflict of interest. The fiery Good Hope coach didn’t take it easy on his son’s team. He played to win, which is exactly what the Raiders did.
After watching his son make a go-ahead shot at the end of the second quarter, David Hulsey made the necessary halftime adjustments and led Good Hope to a 70-56 win over West Point Tuesday night.
“You don’t know how tough that was tonight,” David Hulsey said. “It’s not just because my son is on the other team, but I’ve known most of those (West Point) kids my whole life. You don’t think about it much during the game, but it really hits you afterward.
“Tristan understands, but it’s still tough. They played so hard, I hate it for them.”
Good Hope (2-0) overcame a slow start early in the game. West Point (0-3) took a 20-10 lead into the second quarter and led by 16 at one point.
But the Raiders rallied back. Depending heavily on the 3-pointer, Good Hope went on a 13-0 run midway through the second quarter. Cameron and Kyle Aycock combined for three straight 3s during the run, and Garrett Roberts cut the lead to three with a layup.
Good Hope blew open a tight game in the third period. The Raiders capped off a 20-9 run when Scott Motes made a jumper to extend the lead to 51-41.
West Point’s hopes for a comeback took a significant hit when standout center Zach Douglas fouled out with 5:07 remaining in the game. The Raiders took advantage, following with a 9-2 run to extend their lead to 14.
Kyle Aycock led Good Hope with a game-high 23 points, while Motes and Cameron Aycock had 14 each. The Raiders made seven 3-pointers in the game.
Mason Beck led West Point with 19 points, while Douglas and Kevin Aaron tossed in 10 each.
