COLD SPRINGS —
Times have been tough on Cold Springs’ boys basketball team as of late.
The Eagles’ star senior, Chayse Elliott, is likely to be out for at least another five weeks, and a different starter was also unavailable for the team’s latest game, forcing coach Tim Burleson to turn to a few freshman and a sophomore to keep the varsity roster at an even eight.
Wait, make that seven after Cold Springs was dealt yet another blow when starting point guard Brandon Whaley suffered a possibly broken nose in Tuesday night’s area battle at home versus Sulligent.
Make-shift lineup and all, the Eagles pushed aside their problems and weathered the storm with a gritty 64-62 triumph over the Blue Devils.
With the victory, Cold Springs improved to 9-1 and 1-0 in Class 2A, Area 14 play.
“It was really one of the gutsiest efforts I’ve seen out of one of my teams,” Burleson said. “I was really pleased with the heart our kids played with through all the adversity.”
Triston Chambers continued to shine in his freshman season with 24 points and nine rebounds. Layne Rice picked up a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds.
The coach felt his team’s effort on the boards was a vast improvement compared to their performance in a loss to Fairview last Friday. That’s an area Burleson is concerned about with Elliott stuck on the bench for the foreseeable future.
“We did a better job rebounding last night,” the coach said. “That responsibility does not just fall on one or two individuals. It’s a collective effort by everybody.”
Mason Harris and Terry Campbell both scored eight points for the Eagles. Josh Freeman was good for six points, and Tyler Rice had three.
Cold Springs has another tough test waiting for them Friday on the road at Holly Pond.
