PREP BASKETBALL: Saints’ boys grab late momentum in 58-50 win vs. Susan Moore

— Basketball is commonly referred to as a game of runs.

And, on Tuesday night, the St. Bernard’s boys basketball team certainly put that term to the test, using two separate scoring sprees to take care of Susan Moore by a 58-50 final.

“Total team effort tonight,” Saints’ coach Wade Knight said. “We’re playing well and getting a lot better.”

St. Bernard started out sluggish and found themselves in a 19-10 hole early in the second quarter.

That was before JaDavian Roland started to heat up, as the Saints rode the senior’s 18 first-half points, going on a 22-9 run to take a four-point advantage heading into the break.

The Bulldogs battled back in the third quarter, managing to cut St. Bernard’s lead to 39-37 late in the eight-minute span.

However, the Saints responded with three baskets of their own, capped off by a Gavin Harris 3-pointer to give the home team a six-point lead heading into the final quarter.

Susan Moore clawed back into the game once more late in the fourth quarter, cutting the lead to two with just over three minutes to play.

Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, it was the Roland show as the Saints’ guard scored his team’s final nine points to preserve an eight-point victory for St. Bernard’s.

“I can’t say enough about my seniors,” Knight said. “JaDavian controls the outside for us, and Sean (Moriarty) controls the inside.”

Roland finished with a game-high 29 points, with Moriarty adding 14 points of his own for the Saints.

Harris chipped in with nine, John Gurtowski had four and Dean Smith contributed two points in the win.

Knight believes execution has played a big role in his team’s recent success.

“We are executing on both ends of the floor,” he said. “We didn’t really do that last year. We showed a lot of character tonight, from our seniors to our young players and bench. The kids are starting to get excited about this team.”

The Saints’ next game will be at home next Monday against Whitesburg Christian, the same team they just beat 51-46 this past Tuesday night.

Varsity Girls

% Susan Moore 63, St. Bernard’s 31: The Saints were no match for their visitors, as they were easily discarded by the undefeated Bulldogs on Thursday night.

St. Bernard trailed by just 13 points at the break and pulled to within nine on a Katherine Gamble jumper early in the third quarter.

That was as close as the Saints would get, though, as Susan Moore outscored St. Bernard 27-5 the rest of the way, stomping any chances for a comeback.

The Bulldogs’ relentless backcourt pressure was too much for the Saints to overcome. St. Bernard mustered only 11 points in the second half.

Leading scorers for the Saints were Zoie Wilson, Zana Wilson and Gamble. All three had seven points each.

Audrey Cofield poured in four, Aymee Chauvin had three, Michayla Brown scored two and Savannah Glover netted one.

Ninth-grade Boys
