PREP FOOTBALL: Holly Pond ends season with win, beats Cold Springs

By Michael A. Cummings

COLD SPRINGS — Four different players scored touchdowns to lead Holly Pond High’s football team to a 28-15 win over Cold Springs Thursday night in each team’s season finale.

Derrick Stancil, Jake Harden and Josh Prichard scored rushing touchdowns, while Wesley Cook added another on a 28-yard reception as the visiting Broncos (3-7) won for the second time in four weeks and ended the Eagles’ (0-10) season without a win.

After a season derailed by a series injuries, Holly Pond coach Steve Miller said his team had a chance on Thursday to show how hard they’ve worked this season.

Cook, the Broncos’ starting quarterback, was not 100 percent the first few weeks after injuring his throwing shoulder in the preseason. Fullback Pat Duke suffered a season-ending knee injury midway through the year.

“Our kids have played hard all year. We’ve had a lot of injuries, but that hasn’t kept our kids from playing hard,” said Miller. “And it hasn’t kept our coaches from working hard. Our coaches have worked harder than any group I’ve ever seen.

“We’ve done the things that it takes to be a good football team, even if our performances on Fridays didn’t show it. But I’m just glad that it had a chance to pay off for them.”

Cold Springs opened the scoring midway through the first quarter on a 21-yard field goal by Coy Calvert.

Holly Pond responded with 22 unanswered points to end the half. Harden scored on a 16-yard run for the Broncos’ first score before Stancil connected with Cook for a 28-yard touchdown on a running back pass.

Just before halftime, Stancil found the end zone from 45 yards out to increase Holly Pond’s lead 22-3.

After the break, Cold Springs got scoring runs of 3 and 56 yards from Dillon Cordes and Nicholas Speer, respectively.

Prichard scored Holly Pond’s final touchdown on a 10-yard run.
