PREP ROUNDUP : Bearcat tennis teams pick up wins over Fort Payne

Cullman’s tennis teams added victories to their ledgers on Monday with 9-0 home, section wins over Fort Payne.

The boys made it a clean sweep on the singles’ side, taking all six matches by 8-0 scores after dropping a combined 11 games in their previous matches against 6A Hazel Green.

The Bearcats remained stellar in doubles play, combining to outscore the Wildcats 24-1 in three matches. Clint Watson and Baylor Adams (8-0) were rock solid at No. 1, while the tandems of Jacob Davis/Luke Bowden (8-1) and Ryan Hunt/Mark Davis (8-0) were every bit at good at the No. 2 and 3 positions for the Black and Gold. Jacob Lambert and Parker Adams also scored an 8-1 decision in exhibition play.

Hannah Cornelius continued her fine play at No. 1 with a rousing 8-0 victory, while No. 2 McKenzie Bussman, No. 3 Olivia Sharpton and No. 4 Bailey Barker also turned in 8-0 scores as the Lady Bearcats secured a 9-0 victory of their own.

Mary Claire Smith and Makenna Smith also took home 8-1 decisions on the day.

Like their male counterparts, the Black and Gold girls wasted little time dispatching Fort Payne in doubles play, with the top-seeded duo of Cornelius and Bussman securing an 8-0 win, while No. 2 Baker/Sharpton (8-1) and No. 3 Smith/Smith (8-1) also picked up easy triumphs over the Wildcats.

The girls will take to the courts again on next Tuesday at Scottsboro. Last week’s full-team match against Arab was rained out and will be played on Feb. 23.
