HANCEVILLE — The first quarter was all Melissa Clingman, the second was The Ruth Horton Show and Holly Pond cruised to a 63-15 first-round rout of Vinemont on Saturday at the Cullman County Basketball Tournament.

Clingman went wild for 10 of her 13 points in the opening seven minutes, allowing the No. 2 Broncos to score 18 unanswered points and finish the first quarter up 21-2. The seventh-seeded Eagles' goose egg on the scoreboard didn’t hatch until Morgan Lawrence hit an inside shot nearly six minutes in.

The following frame was Horton’s time to shine, and she took full advantage of it, reeling off seven straight points for Holly Pond, which headed to the locker room with an insurmountable 31-7 lead. Horton chipped in a layup in the third quarter and a three-point play late in the fourth to complete a game-high 15-point performance.

Abby Gambrill drained two 3-pointers and also cracked double digits for the Broncos with 10 points. Meg Barksdale and Taylor Tankersley both scored seven points.

Other Holly Pond contributors were Adair Gillian, six points; Taylor Oslin, three; and Bailey Shedd and Lauren Camp, one.

Holly Pond locked down on defense and kept the Eagles off the scoreboard in the final quarter.

Lawrence provided most of Vinemont’s offense with 12 points. Erin Chambers accounted for the other three. Both players made one trey apiece.

The Broncos will have nearly a week to prepare for a semifinal contest versus Good Hope. The two will play next Friday at 5 p.m.
