PREP BASKETBALL: Lady Warriors' JV squad opens county tourney with lopsided win

HANCEVILLE — The Cullman County Basketball Tournament is the end of the road for all local junior varsity teams. By the end of the annual weeklong spectacle, only one boys and one girls squad will close out the season as champions, while the rest will head home empty-handed.

West Point's girls are still alive and well in the title hunt after eliminating Hanceville with a 34-14 victory to open the tourney Saturday afternoon at Wallace State's Tom Drake Coliseum.

Daeshia Smith battled in the paint for a game-high eight points, and Deanna Waldrep pitched in seven for the fifth-seeded Warriors. The No. 5 Bulldogs received five points from Braylah Anderton.

The ballgame began slowly for both squads, with West Point holding a 5-3 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Alyssa Rossie tied the score right away in the second, but that was the last time Hanceville would score before halftime. Tess Hembree and Waldrep proceeded to team up for 11 straight points, and Taylor Deese added a free throw to give the Warriors a comfortable 17-5 cushion at the break.

In addition to Smith and Waldrep's contributions, Deese tallied five points; Lexie Burdette, Hembree and Jeri Beasley, four apiece; and Emily Johnson, two.

Madyson Cummings picked up three points for the Bulldogs. Allyson Waldrop, Rossie and Kaylee Natt each scored two.

West Point advances to take on top-seeded Cold Springs Thursday at 5 p.m.
