Cullman showed no signs of slowing down Saturday, defeating the Lions, 40-33, in the second annual Bama Shootout and extending its winning streak to nine games.
“It was a low-scoring affair for us,” coach Bobby Meyer said. “We were able to score the ball a little better in the second half, though. Briarwood matched up very well with us. It was almost like playing ourselves in a way."
Lawson Schaffer led all scorers with 12 points, earning MVP honors for the game.
Houston Turner added eight points, while Troy Forrest and Seth Swalve each pitched in six and five points, respectively.
Other Bearcat contributors included Jason McAfee, four; Lukas McNeal, three; and Austin Beck, two.
Varsity Boys
% Cold Springs 57, Oakman 40: The Eagles improved their record 12-7 overall with an easy victory over the Wildcats on Friday night.
“The win puts us in position to possible host our area tournament,” coach Tim Burleson said. “We need to win against Lamar County next Tuesday, though, to have a shot.”
Triston Chambers dropped in 19 for the Eagles, while Chayse Elliott provided 16 of his own.
Other Eagle scorers included Layne Rice, who netted 12 points and Josh Freeman and Mason Harris, both of whom had five.
Varsity Girls
% Cullman 58, Briarwood 45: The terrific tandem of Baylee Johnson and Morgan Smith paced the game for the Lady Bearcats as the Cullman took care of business at the Bama Shootout, defeating the Lions by a comfortable 13 points.
“Our defense was good, aside from giving up a few too many 3-pointers,” coach Jonathan Hayes said. “Outside of that, we forced a lot of turnovers and doubled them up on the boards.”
The win moves the Bearcats’ record to 11-8 on the season following a tough loss to area foe West Point on Friday night.
Morgan Smith led Cullman with 24 points, eight rebounds and four steals, while Johnson, a sophomore, added 19 points, four assists and two steals of her own.
Other Bearcat contributors included Blair Nall and Hayden Short, five points; Madison Lee, three; and Christina Skinner, two.
% Holly Pond 63, New Hope 18: The No. 7 Broncos (18-4, 5-0) entered the second quarter with a commanding 22-0 cushion and coasted the rest of the way for yet another overwhelming area victory.
Natasha Holcombe was at her usual best with 20 points, while Meg Gambrill and Taylor Terry cracked double digits with 12 and 10, respectively.
Other Holly Pond contributors were Rachel Finley, nine points; Madison Hicks, four; Lacy Malone, three; Kristen Sparks and Taylor Rowell, two apiece; and Lexi Lynn, one.
