LOCAL SPORTS: Zany 5K Mud Run prepared for Oktoberfest introduction

CULLMAN — The organizers of this year’s Cullman Oktoberfest Mud Run weren’t messing around when deciding a theme for the inaugural event. When they say “expect to get dirty,” they mean it.

“Anyone who participates is going to get muddy from head to toe,” said Erika Mead, director of tourism and recreation at the Cullman Area Chamber of Commerce. “We are very excited about this event.”

The race will be a challenging 5k fun run, where participants traverse through several obstacles and terrains designed to challenge both the body and the mind.

“There are multiple mud holes several feet deep,” Mead said. “The obstacles, although difficult, won’t be impossible.”

The Mud Run will take place at the Stony Lonesome OHV Park in Bremen on Oct. 13. Registration will begin at 7:30 a.m., and runners will take their mark at 9 a.m.

The cost to enter is $55 a person or $165 for a four-person team. Proceeds from the race will go toward the Veterans Memorial Park at Sportsman Lake as a token of appreciation to all veterans who have served in the past.

The race is open to anyone ages 16 or older. Those under 18 must provide parental consent in order to participate.

Mead said she got the idea for the non-traditional race when she was turned away at a similar event due to maximum capacity.

“I just thought it’d be a great thing for Stony Lonesome Park to host,” Mead said. “Both Stony and the Chamber of Commerce were on board with it.”

It’s well known that Cullman’s annual Oktoberfest garners a great deal of publicity. Mead hopes the Mud Run will become a staple for many years to come.

“We hope that by adding this event, we can bring something new to Oktoberfest by having an event outside of the city,” she said.

Mead is hoping for between 100-200 participants in the 5K’s first year. She believes this particular event targets a younger audience, which could result in greater participation in future runs.

“The chamber thinks that Cullman Oktoberfest is a wonderful event every year,” Mead added. “We hope that the Mud Run will be a great addition to Oktoberfest's yearly activities.”
