FAIRVIEW — The Cullman volleyball team picked up three wins on Thursday while managing to halt what had been a hot streak by Holly Pond.

The Bearcats defeated the Broncos in three sets (25-17, 20-25, 15-12) to complete off the quad-match sweep at Fairview. Cullman also defeated the host Aggies (26-24, 28-26) and Douglas (25-13, 26-24) in its earlier matches.

“I’m so proud of the team and how they played today,” coach Kristen Jochum-Barnett said. “These were really big wins heading into the area tournament.”

The Bearcats were led by Roxanne Orr, who had an impressive stat-line, notching 18 kills, seven aces and four blocks over three matches. Olivia Kontogeorge added 13 kills, four blocks and two aces, while Oakleigh White collected eight kills, two aces and one block. Cullman was also aided by Erica Thomas’ 13 kills and Kaitlyn Brannon’s 35 assists.

Stats for Holly Pond were not readily available at the conclusion of the match.

The Bearcats were able to play well, even during what could be a distracting week for most high school students.

“It’s homecoming week this week and this was our fifth match so far,” Jochum-Barnett said. “I thought the girls stayed very focused for all of their matches.”

Cullman will look to continue its winning ways when volleyball squads across the state begin area tournament play on Oct. 18.
