The homecoming crowd was decked out in their green and white garb, anticipating the crowning of the queen at halftime and a win at the end of the night.
The queen they got.
Holly Pond (1-5, 1-3) faced off against neighboring-county foe J.B. Pennington (2-4, 2-2) in a Class 3A, Region 6 matchup on Friday night, as the Broncos came up short in a 21-14 overtime loss.
Each team was forced to punt away their first possessions in the first quarter. Holly Pond was able to put together a scoring drive on its next drive, though, getting on the board first late in the first quarter. Jacob Jones found the end zone on an 8-yard run, and Nic Hays added the point after to give the Broncos a 7-0 lead.
Holly Pond’s defense denied the Tigers an early second-quarter touchdown, forcing the ball over on downs and and allowing them to take over on their own 21-yard line with five minutes remaining before the break. The Broncos ended the half with a 33-yard field goal attempt that missed wide as the final seconds rolled off the clock.
J. B. Pennington received the second-half kickoff and did not waste any time closing the gap to eventually grab the third-quarter lead.
Tiger quarterback Brandon Butts had a 19 -ard scoring run, the PAT failed and Holly Pond’s lead was cut to one. J.B. Pennington scored again after taking the ball 82 yards in six plays. Andreas Remirez had a 23-yard grab in the end zone, a two-point conversion pass was good and Holly Pond was down 14-7.
The final quarter of regulation allowed the Broncos an opportunity to get back into the game and a shot at the win. The Tigers fumbled the ball at midfield, and Jones covered it up for the Broncos.
Austin Hoffman connected with Austin Higganbotham from 25 yards out for a touchdown, and Hays’ kick was good to tie the game at 14-14 with 4:40 remaining.
The Tigers then had to punt, but the Broncos handed it back over with an interception on their own 36-yard line with only 11 seconds remaining.
The Tigers’ Hail Mary came up a couple yards short, leaving them with first and goal on the 2-yard line and 2 seconds on the clock. THey chose to try a 19-yard field goal, which was no good to send the game into overtime.
J.B. Pennington made good on their first overtime attempt. Butts scored from 14 yards out on akeeper, and the Broncos could not answer back, winding up with the loss.
