It didn’t take long for Cullman to send a message to fifth-ranked Hartselle.
Will Drake scored in the first minute of the match and Cullman High’s soccer team ran out with a 5-1 win over Hartselle Thursday night in a Class 5A, Section 8 match.
With the win, the fourth-ranked Bearcats (10-4-1) kept their perfect record in Section 8 play intact at 3-0.
“We were really fired up for Hartselle,” said Cullman coach John Drake. “They’re always a tough, physical team, but we were ready for them.”
Cullman doubled its advantage with 31 minutes left in the first half on Andrew Arbet’s first goal of the night. Hartselle pulled one goal back 10 minutes when a loose ball drifted through the Bearcats’ back line and into the goal, but after that it was all Cullman.
The Bearcats took a 5-1 lead at halftime thanks to two more goals — both on penalty kicks — by Arbet and another by Will Drake.
“At halftime I told everybody to keep it together and make it out of there with no injuries,” said John Drake. “We did a good job keeping our heads.”
Hartselle collected seven yellow cards in a physical match.
