Prep roundup: Saints wallop West End, win third straight
Staff reportsThe opponent may have changed, but the results didn’t. Neither did the fashion in which in St. Bernard Prep won.
Since returning from the holiday break, St. Bernard’s girls basketball team has been on roll — winning three straight after Monday night’s 68-24 thrashing of West End-Walnut Grove.
For the second straight night, senior guard Brittney Schaefers led the Saints in scoring. She tossed in 21 points while adding eight rebounds, six assists and six steals.
Natalie Kelley followed with 14 points, seven rebounds and five assists, while Julia Wimberly added 14 points and eight rebounds.
Kayla Wilson led West End with nine points.
St. Bernard travels to Vinemont Thursday night.
Good Hope 53, J.B. Pennington 14: The Raiders used a dominant defensive performance to remain unbeaten in Class 3A, Area 12 play.
Good Hope (14-6, 5-0) held Pennington to only three points in the first half. The Tigers trailed 42-9 at the end of the third quarter.
Kayla Elrod led Good Hope with 19 points, five rebounds and five steals, while Nina Mills added 13 points, nine steals and six assists. Erica Speegle led the Raiders with eight rebounds.
Shauna Sivley led Pennington with nine points.
Holly Pond 47, Fairview 35: The host Broncos grabbed the victory over Cullman County rival Fairview despite committing 20 turnovers.
Cydney Morris led a balanced attack for Holly Pond (15-7) with 12 points, while Haley Bagwell and Kelsey Hawkins added nine each. Haley Terry finished with eight for the Broncos, who forced 24 Fairview turnovers.
Courtney Strong and Kayla Schnittker led Fairview (3-13) with seven points apiece. Jazz Foust and Mandi House added six each.
Varsity Boys
Good Hope 57, Pennington 50: The Tigers’ upset bid fell just short, with Good Hope winning the Class 3A, Area 12 contest.
Despite being outrebounded by Pennington — which matched Good Hope in points during the second and third periods — the Raiders were still able to hold off the Tigers late.
Brody Whitlock led Good Hope with 23 points. He made six 3-pointers in the game.
Kyle Aycock followed with 11 points and Trace Moody added 10.
West End-Walnut Grove 54, St. Bernard 32: Daniel Spaulding recorded a double-double for the Saints in the loss.
Spaulding finished the game with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Jake Killibrough added seven points.
Joseph Underwood paced West End with 18 points.

Cullman High had just defeated Wenonah 21-6 in the opening round of the Class 5A playoffs, but the postgame vibe felt more like a Bearcats loss. -

ELKMONT — The Vinemont Eagles were ambushed Friday night at Boss Hill Stadium. With the game tied 7-7, Elkmont High exploded for five touchdowns in less than six minutes late in the first half en route to a 56-7 victory in the first round of the Class 3A playoffs.

RECLASS SHAKES UP AREA
No one at West Point High was surprised when the Alabama High School Athletic Association released its reclassification numbers for the 2010-12 school years.
West Point’s return to Class 4A was short-lived. When the ’10 football season begins next fall, the Warriors will be playing in Class 5A, Region 6 alongside Cullman, Hartselle and Walker.
