BACK IN THE HUNT
By Michael A. CummingsHANCEVILLE — After a rough December, Tyler Creel and Vinemont High’s boys basketball team were looking for a performance to get their season back on track.
They found it Friday night.
Creel poured in a game-high 21 points — including 10 during a 13-0 third-quarter blitz — and led the Eagles to a message-sending 59-38 win over Hanceville at Lane Horton Gymnasium.
“We were waiting for a good game and it finally came tonight,” said Creel. “I think we’re on the right track. Everybody did their job tonight.”
With the win, Vinemont ended Hanceville’s chances of grabbing the top seed out of Class 3A, Area 12. The Eagles host Good Hope (13-7, 3-1) Monday night in what will most likely determine the area’s top seed.
Vinemont started quickly, forcing the hosts into a spate of early turnovers. The Eagles led 17-5 after one quarter and 35-19 at halftime.
After the break, Vinemont stretched its lead to 52-23 with a 13-0 run sparked by two straight Creel 3-pointers. The senior guard finished with 10 points during the quarter.
“The biggest difference in the game was they defended really well,” said Hanceville coach Daniel Wakefield, whose Bulldogs beat Area 12 rival Good Hope earlier this week. “We couldn’t stop them driving the ball. That was the difference.”
J.J. Smith finished with 13 points and Josh Wyenandt added 12 points to go with eight rebounds for Vinemont (13-7, 3-1), which went 14-for-19 from the free throw line.
Trey Jordan led Hanceville (10-9) with 13 points, while Eric Clopton tossed in eight and Geoffrey Hall added seven. The Bulldogs finished 11 of 17 at the charity stripe.
Hanceville travels to Corner Monday night.

PREP BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Eagles hold on, defeat Holly Pond in nailbiter
Late in the fourth quarter Friday night, just before a couple of big free throws, Cold Springs High girls basketball coach Tammy West pulled aside Georgia Myrex for a quick pep talk.
Except for one thing: When West placed both hands on top of her star player’s head, it looked a little more like some kind of crunch-time benediction.

AUBURN FOOTBALL: Washington may be playing himself into job as kick returner
The road to success has been long for Demond Washington.
Just about as long as his big return last weekend against Georgia.
With his Auburn Tigers trailing 24-17 in the fourth quarter this past Saturday, Washington took a Bulldogs kickoff at his own 1-yard line, weaved in and out of traffic and sped all the way to the end zone for a 99-yard touchdown. -
CULLMAN FOOTBALL: Versatile Adams fills multiple roles in Cats’ offense
Connor Adams has worn several labels over the past 15 months.
Starting running back, injured reserve, H-back, Wildcat quarterback, fill-in running back — those all fit the bill.
But here’s another one Adams can claim, and it’s something a little different:
Blessed. -
