PREP CROSS COUNTRY: St. Bernard girls, boys take fifth at Scottsboro Invitational

SCOTTSBORO — St. Bernard’s Logan Ayers was feeling a bit of deja vu as she glanced at her time after completing the varsity girls’ 5K race at the Scottsboro Invitational on Saturday.

That might’ve been because it was the exact same number — 20:17 — posted next to her name at the Chickasaw Trails Invitational only one week before.

That time was good for second overall in last Saturday’s season-opening meet, but it allowed Ayers to secure a first-place finish in her second race of the year.

Ayers’ win, as well as a third-place result from Ayleana Mami (20:33), propelled the Saints’ girls to fifth out of 15 Class 1A-4A teams.

The other three runners who contributed to the team score were Jaden Edge, 24th (22:33); Morgan Matz, 64th (24:50); and Allison Hubert, 73rd (25:37). Seventh-grader Leah Rose Mami was 81st (26:03).

William Calvert said the top-five girls’ average improved an entire minute from the previous week.

“Logan’s time stayed the same, so the other girls kicked it out,” the St. Bernard coach said. “I was really excited about that.”

Will Faulk’s third-place run (17:49) helped the Saints’ boys also take fifth as a team.

Contributing runners were Steven Mami, 22nd (18:52); Oscar Perez, 35th (19:28; Seamus Russell, 40th (19:37); and Sammy Robles, 50th (19:59). Isaias Robles was 67th (20:43) and Thomas Russell was 88th (21:42).

“We had a really good meet,” Calvert said. “I’m looking forward to running a little closer to home at Fairview next week.”

‰ Results from Cold Springs, Cullman and Fairview were not made available by deadline.
