MOUNDVILLE —
Hale County earned its first win of the season after an offensive explosion with 464 total yards, defeating Class 2A, Region 4-rival Cold Springs 41-21 on Friday night.
Hale County freshman Blake Williams led the offense with four of the Wildcats’ six touchdowns, finishing with 199 yards on 10 carries.
Hale County coach Joey Milligan spoke highly of Williams’ performance on the night.
He’s a real good ball player,” Milligan said. “He’s young. He’s got a very good knowledge of the game. He plays it hard. He’s very heads-y. He plays both sides of the ball. He knows what he’s doing at just about every position. He’s a tool that’s a very big asset to us.”
After a scoreless first quarter, Cold Springs opened the second with Logan Campbell finding Vince Steward for a 42-yard touchdown pass to put the Eagles’ up 7-0.
But Hale County responded by scoring three touchdowns in the second quarter to take a 21-7 lead at halftime.
Cold Springs’ coach Rod Elliott said the three-touchdown quarter was the turning point in the game.
“We had a hard time stopping their sweep play,” Elliott said. “They were pretty athletic and they were physical on top of that. Sometimes that’s hard to overcome on certain nights.”
With 2:19 left in the third, the Eagles scored on a 1-yard run by Caleb Ellison to cut the lead to 28-14.
Hale County responded with a touchdown and two fourth-quarter turnovers by Cold Springs to snuff out any comeback the Eagles were mounting
Elliott gave credit to the Wildcats’ physicality in the game.
“We played a pretty good football team tonight,” he said. “Physically, they controlled the game all night. It may have looked like they had 15 on the field, but I’m pretty sure they had 11. They did a good job. We didn’t tackle well in the first half. We made some mistakes tackling and then physically they got wearing on us.”
Hale County (1-2, 1-1) will travel to Frances Marion next Friday, while Cold Springs (1-2, 0-2) will host Aliceville.
