PREP VOLLEYBALL: St. Bernard varsity, JV use comebacks to beat Hanceville

HANCEVILLE — After jumping out to an 0-2 deficit to host Hanceville, the St. Bernard varsity volleyball team stormed back and won the last three sets to secure a dramatic, hard-fought victory — 18-25, 23-25, 25-17, 25-11, 15-13 — over its in-county opponent on Tuesday night.

The triumph was the Saints' first since a season-opening W against Asbury on Aug. 23.

Numerous St. Bernard players were valuable in the positive outcome, but none more than Abigail Mescher, who compiled 15 assists, 11 aces and one kill. Not far behind was Michayla Brown with 10 kills, six aces and one block.

Other St. Bernard contributors were Katherine Gamble, five kills, two aces and one block; Cassie Mariano, three digs, two aces and two kills; Zoie Wilson, four kills and two aces; Alli Messick, four aces and one kill; Siobhan Russell, seven digs; and Aimme Cortes, three digs.

Statistics were not provided for Hanceville.

St. Bernard will travel to Falkville Thursday for an area matchup. The Bulldogs won't play again until Sept. 25, when they head to West Point.

% St. Bernard 2, Hanceville 1: Just like the varsity match, the Saints had to rely on some comeback magic to come out on top in a three-set thriller — 20-25, 25-10, 15-11.
