Eagles fall just short at Addison

ADDISON — The Bulldogs and Eagles put up plenty of offense late, but defense was the key Friday night in Addison.

Thanks to a defensive stop on the game’s final play, Addison escaped with a 14-12 win over Cold Springs in a Class 2A, Region 7 showdown.

“It was a defensive contest all the way,” Cold Springs head coach Alex Stephenson said. “Our guys played real well all night on defense.”

With the score tied 6-6 late in the fourth, the Bulldogs were able to take their final drive 59 yards down the field and took the lead on the second touchdown pass of the night by Cole Hayes.

Hayes found Jake Russell in the back of the end zone, splitting two Eagle defenders for a 19-yard strike which Russell was able to jump up and grab.

Coach Randy White opted for some trickery as the Bulldogs faked the extra-point kick and Hayes found Blake Robinson all alone for the 2-point conversion, giving Addison a 14-6 lead.

With 2:53 remaining in the game, Cold Springs needed to drive 80 yards to tie the game and send it into overtime.

Down to their last snap with just one second on the clock, T.J. Aby found Jacob Garmon for a 15-yard connection to make the score 14-12.

Forced to go for the 2-point conversion, the Eagles tried to run the ball up the middle, and Blake Denney was stopped just shy of the goal line.

Aby finished 11-for-30 on the night with 103 yards and a touchdown. Aby also ran in a score in the third quarter from 2 yards out.

Hayes completed only two passes in five attempts, but both went for touchdowns to Russell for a total of 25 yards.

Robinson led the Bulldogs with 141 yards rushing on 21 carries. Trent Godbee finished with 11 carries for 33 yards and Steton Parker added 28 yards.

For Cold Springs, Denney finished with 100 yards on 12 rushes, Aby had 26 yards and a touchdown on 15 rush attempts and Michael Johnson had one rush for six yards.

Cold Springs will try to pick up its second win of the season next week against Oakman, while the Bulldogs travel to Lamar County.
