Scott, Murphy: One good team will be left out

No. 5 Pennington set to travel to No. 3 Addison for sub-state

ADDISON — If Addison High’s softball team advances to the Class 2A state tournament, Lady Bulldogs coach Jeff Scott knows his team has earned it.

J.B. Pennington coach Wayne Murphy feels the same way — especially since third-ranked Addison is the only team standing in the way.

Addison will host fifth-ranked Pennington today at 2 p.m., with the winner advancing to next week’s state tournament in Montgomery.

“It doesn’t matter how you look at it, this one is going to be tough,” Scott said. “There’s going to be two good teams battling it out. This is two teams that have been ranked in the top five all year. It’s going to be tough.”

Murphy agreed.

“We’re going over there to play a very good softball team,” said Murphy, who led Pennington to the Class 2A state championship game last season. “If we’re going to advance, we have to play our best. It’s probably going to be low-scoring games, so the team that makes the fewest mistakes will probably advance.”

It hasn’t been an easy road to the second round of sub-state for Addison. The Lady Bulldogs defeated Oakman — last season’s state champion — in the Area 10 title game, and Fyffe pushed Scott’s team to the limit in the first round of sub-state Tuesday.

“Our girls have overcome a lot,” said Scott, whose team will be playing for its seventh straight appearance in the state tournament. “It hasn’t been easy to get here, and it’s not going to be easy to advance. We’ve got to come out and play our best.”
