Good Hope falls short, drops pair at Munford

MUNFORD — Munford ended Good Hope High’s softball season with a 9-5, extra-inning win in game three of the teams’ first-round sub-state series.
Munford won the first game 4-3 before dropping the second 4-3 in eight innings.
The Lady Lions led 5-3 after six innings in the third game before a controversial call tied the game at 5 in the seventh.
With two out and two on, Jessica Raper drew a walk and advanced to first on a passed ball. Brandi Hudson and Brianna Yarbrough scored, and Raper tried to score after the umpire called time.
After discussion with both coaches, the umpire sent Raper back to first and counted the two runs, leaving the teams tied going into the eighth.
In the extra frame, Jessica Butterworth hit an RBI double and Keyana Chapman hit a three-run homer to give Munford a 9-5 win.
Raper had a leadoff home run in the fifth. Brooke Banks had three hits while Ashley Bailey, Katie Windsor and Hudson each had two hits. Yarborough took the loss.
‰ Lexington 3-7, Holly Pond 1-0: After a 3-1 win in the series opener, Lexington poured it on in a 7-0 game 2 win to get the sweep.
Class 3A, Area 14 runner-up Holly Pond finished 9-9 in a season shortened by rain-outs of seven games and two tournaments.
Holly Robbins tossed a two-hit, six-strikeout shutout in game 2. Four Holly Pond batters reached base against her — two on walks and another on a dropped third strike.
Lindsey Hestla took the game 1 loss in a six-hit outing.
Hestla didn't give up an earned run in the opener, but Lexington did its damage in the first on three hits and two errors.
‰ J.B. Pennington 3-4, Mars Hill 0-0: The Lady Tigers advanced to the second round of the playoffs by sweeping two games from Mars Hill Tuesday.
Alise Altman recorded the win in game one. She struck out 11 while holding Mars Hill to five hits.
Shae South recorded the win in game two. She gave up one hit while striking out three. Altman struck out six while giving up one hit in the final four innings.
Kristen King went 1-for-3 with two RBIs for Pennington in game one, while Tiffany Shedd went 1-2 with a triple.
In game two, Candace Watts went 1-for-3 with two RBIs, while Tiffany Alldredge went 1-for-4.
Pennington travels to Addison for the second round Friday.
