HANCEVILLE — If it went wrong for Hanceville High’s girls basketball team in the first quarter, it went right in the second.
Trailing 12-3 after one period, the Bulldogs buried visiting Vinemont with a quick 10-0 run to start the second before outscoring the Eagles 27-8 during the quarter.
Hanceville led 30-20 at halftime and never looked back, taking a 58-48 win in a Class 3A, Area 12 contest.
Senior guard La’Sheena Nation hit a 3-pointer at the third-quarter buzzer to put the Bulldogs up 43-28. Hanceville led by as many as 19 points in the fourth quarter before settling for the 10-point win.
Nation finished with a game-high 21 points to lead the Bulldogs, while Nicole Miller finished with 14 and Emilee Thomas tossed in 11. Monica Hunter added six.
Hanceville (10-9, 4-2) finishes as the second seed out of Area 12 behind Good Hope. The Bulldogs hit the road to face Corner on Monday.
Vinemont (2-16, 1-3) got 20 points from Bre Rodgers. Caitlyn Mefford added nine for the Eagles, who host Cold Springs today.
• Cullman 39, Walker 38: The visiting Bearcats trailed 18-8 after one quarter and 24-23 at halftime, but outscored Walker 12-3 in the third quarter to pull off the Class 5A, Area 12 win.
Jennifer Cooper led Cullman (9-7, 2-2) with 18 points on six 3-pointers, including one in the last minute to put the Bearcats up by one point.
Catherine Nyquist added nine points for Cullman, which hosts Brewer Thursday night in another Area 12 contest.
• St. Bernard 64, Parkway Christian 27: The Saints picked up the Class 1A, Area 9 win behind 26 points, 14 rebounds and six assists from Natalie Kelley.
Brittany Schaefers added 24 points, five rebounds and six steals for St. Bernard (6-3).
• Good Hope 62, Holly Pond 56: The host Raiders avenged a tournament loss to Holly Pond and took the inside track to the No. 2 seed at the Cullman County tournament.
Kayla Elrod paced Good Hope (13-5) with 19 points, while Jorden York tossed in 16 points to go with four rebounds. Elizabeth Hardin added eight points and seven rebounds for the Raiders, who led 20-18 after one quarter, 37-28 at halftime and 47-37 heading into the fourth quarter.
Kelsey Hawkins led Holly Pond (14-7) with 18 points while Cydney Morris and Haley Bagwell finished with 12 apiece. Chasity Chambers added nine.
