Hilton Angle to run for county commission

CULLMAN — The area’s second water source debate has pulled a local poultry farmer into the 2010 Cullman County Commission race.

Hilton Angle, 56, of the Springhill community, recently announced he would run as a Democrat for West Side Associate Commissioner Place 2. Former commissioner Stanley Yarbrough (Rep.) and Good Hope resident William “Willy” Hendrix (Dem.) have already announced their candidacies for the seat.

The seat is currently held by Wayne Willingham.

“My main concern is water,” Angle said. “We just can’t stand for our water to triple. Poultry folks would be put out of business.”

The poultry industry, which requires large quantities of water to keep chickens from overheating and dying, is Cullman County’s main industry.

The county currently relies on Lake Catoma as its sole water source. The city of Cullman plans to construct a dam reservoir on Duck River and create a second water source to protect the area against droughts.

The Cullman County Commission recently proposed an opposing plan to pump water from Smith Lake.

“I’m for Duck River,” Angle said. “We’ve got to stay one way. We can’t split the customer base.”

A native of Cullman County, Angle has been in the poultry business for 20 years. He has also owned a small manufacturing business for a machine he invented and patented for the poultry industry.

“I’ve always been a problem solver ... I think through things before I do them,” Angle said. “That’s important to a county commissioner ... you have to do that when you develop something.”

As commissioner, Angle said he would work to improve roads, schools and make government more transparent.

“I plan to be a full-time commissioner who will stand up for what is right, curb wasteful spending and work for unity between the county and city governments,” Angle said.

Hilton graduated from West Point High School and attended Wallace State Community College. He is married to his wife Cindy and has two children, Chad and Maddie.
