Work continuing in Holly Pond, Vinemont

CULLMAN — Big things are happening for some small towns in Cullman County. Holly Pond is starting work on the Guy Hunt Memorial Library and Museum, and Vinemont is in the first stages of a municipal park.

Holly Pond Mayor Herman Nail said because of recent rains, the work is going slower than expected.

“We are in the process of building a pad for the library and museum,” Nail said.

Nail announced in the last month plans to build the museum and library on land the town recently purchased.

Work has already started on the site, which is located at 456 New Hope Road in Holly Pond, in front of the ball park. The 1.5 acre plot was bought for $68,000.

The estimated cost for phase two of the project is $14,500, which will include hauling in dirt and filling in the basement.

Nail said the town will pay for the initial cost of the preliminary site work, then they will apply for grants to finish the project. Nail said it will be about a two-year process of getting an architect to design the drawings and getting the pricing ready.

Work has also begun at the town tennis courts. Men from The Foundry Farm are providing the labor at no cost while the town is providing the materials.

In Vinemont, work has begun on the sports complex.

“We do have it cleaned off, but it has been too wet to do anything,” Mayor Melba Patton said.

The sports complex has been in the works for more than 12 years, and Patton is happy to see the project finally begin.

The sports complex will have four or five baseball/softball fields. The town has 32.5 acres of land on Highway 31 North, just north of the Vinemont post office where the park will be.

The town has made an access road for heavy equipment to come in and out of the grounds. They purchased a backhoe and two dump trucks to start preliminary work on the park.

“We are moving very slowly on it, but we are making progress,” Patton said. “We have cleared fencing and trees from the property.”
