I-65 Cleanup continues after alleged trucker suicide attempt fails

Traffic along a portion of Interstate 65 near Lacon remained slow Saturday following a late Thursday tractor trailer accident that closed the southbound lane for a time.

Although they believe the truck’s driver may have been suicidal, police said no one was seriously injured in the crash, and no charges had been filed.

Alabama State Troopers said an inmate work crew had been deployed to clean the scene after a tractor trailer driven by Howard Hendrick of Chicago left the road Thursday evening, shattering its cargo of empty beer bottles across the roadway.

Police said Hendrick had called 911 shortly before the accident and had threatened to kill himself. After allegedly wounding himself with a BB gun, Hendrick then allegedly steered the vehicle into a roadside ditch.
