Phase III of CHS stadium renovation approved

North side concession stand work; additional bathrooms on the way

CULLMAN — The final phase of upgrades to the Cullman High School football stadium is set to begin in the coming months, completing a multi-year project that included artificial turf and a revamped layout for Oliver Woodard Stadium.

Located behind the high school on Stadium Drive, renovations at the stadium ramped up in 2010, bringing the outdated facility up to par with the school’s consistently competitive football team.

The first two phases redesigned the drainage system and added an artificial turf field, while the second phase improved the main entrance and ticket booth on the south side of the stadium.

Up next? Replacement of the south side concession stand, as well as the addition of more rest room facilities. The new concession stand will also be designed for multi-use between the football facility and baseball field, which lies just north of the stadium.

“Phase three is to replace the concession stand on the north end of the stadium by the baseball field, as well as hopefully add storage and new rest rooms,” Cullman City Schools Superintendent Dr. Jan Harris said. “We want to tie all of that together, so the concession stands can be used for baseball and football. We’ll probably move it a little bit north and use some of that access road.”

With the football and baseball facilities so close together, Harris said it only made sense to build a new structure that could serve both sports.

We hope to build something that will be more usable to the entire sports complex,” she said. “It’ll be appreciated on both ends and we hope to get going right away. We’ve just been waiting for football season to end.”

Cullman High baseball coach Brent Patterson said the work should go a long way toward improving the baseball facilities for fans and players.

“We can’t wait, because we’ve kind of outgrown our facilities and concession stand,” he said. “We’re excited to create some more space and have a more modern, up-to-date concession stand.”

Design work is ramping up now and Harris said they hope to bid the project later this month.
